That’s how the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, when developed and cultivated, fulfill the seven awakening factors.

howKathaṁ developedbhāvitā andca, monksbhikkhave, the sevensatta awakening factorsbojjhaṅgā howkathaṁ cultivatedbahulīkatā knowledge and freedomvijjāvimuttiṁ fulfill?paripūrenti?

And how are the seven awakening factors developed and cultivated so as to fulfill knowledge and freedom?

hereIdha, monksbhikkhave, a monkbhikkhu the awakening factor of mindfulnesssatisambojjhaṅgaṁ developsbhāveti relying on seclusionvivekanissitaṁ relying on fading awayvirāganissitaṁ relying on cessationnirodhanissitaṁ ripening in letting govossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

the awakening factor of equanimityupekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ developsbhāveti relying on seclusionvivekanissitaṁ relying on fading awayvirāganissitaṁ relying on cessationnirodhanissitaṁ ripening in letting govossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

It’s when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

in this wayEvaṁ developedbhāvitā indeedkho, monksbhikkhave, the sevensatta awakening factorsbojjhaṅgā in this wayevaṁ cultivatedbahulīkatā knowledge and freedomvijjāvimuttiṁ fulfill (quote)paripūrentī”ti.

satisfiedAttamanā thosete monksbhikkhū of the Blessed Onebhagavato the speechbhāsitaṁ approved (quote)abhinandunti.
the Discourse on Mindfulness of BreathingĀnāpānassatisuttaṁ is finishedniṭṭhitaṁ the eighthaṭṭhamaṁ.

That’s how the seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, fulfill knowledge and freedom.” That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, the monks approved what the Buddha said.
