Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
“Tīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu atikkamma māradheyyaṁ ādiccova virocati. Katamehi tīhi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti— imehi kho, bhikkhave, tīhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu atikkamma māradheyyaṁ ādiccova virocatī”ti. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Mendicants, a mendicant with three qualities has slipped free of Māra’s dominion and dazzles like the sun. What three? It’s when they have the entire spectrum of the adept’s ethics, immersion, and wisdom. A mendicant with these three qualities has slipped free of Māra’s dominion and dazzles like the sun.” The Buddha spoke this matter. On this it is said:
“Sīlaṁ samādhi paññā ca, yassa ete subhāvitā; Atikkamma māradheyyaṁ, ādiccova virocatī”ti.
“Whoever has well developed ethics, immersion, and wisdom has slipped free of Māra’s dominion and dazzles like the sun.”
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. Dasamaṁ. Paṭhamo vaggo.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
Tassuddānaṁ Mūladhātu atha vedanā duve, Esanā ca duve āsavā duve; Taṇhāto ca atha māradheyyato, Vaggamāhu paṭhamanti muttamanti.
