thenAtha indeedkho a certainaññatarā deitydevatā lateabhikkantāya at nightrattiyā gloriousabhikkantavaṇṇā the entirekevalakappaṁ Jeta's Grovejetavanaṁ lighting upobhāsetvā whereyena the Blessed Onebhagavā went up to himtenupasaṅkami; having approachedupasaṅkamitvā the Blessed Onebhagavantaṁ having bowedabhivādetvā to one sideekamantaṁ stoodaṭṭhāsi.

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. That deity addressed the Buddha in verse:

"many“Bahū godsdevā humansmanussā andca,
blessingsmaṅgalāni have thought aboutacintayuṁ;
desiringĀkaṅkhamānā well-beingsotthānaṁ,
declarebrūhi the highest blessing."maṅgalamuttamaṁ”.

“Many gods and humans have thought about blessings desiring well-being: declare the highest blessing.”

not fraternizing“Asevanā butca with foolsbālānaṁ,
with the wisepaṇḍitānañca fraternizingsevanā;
honoringPūjā andca those worthy of honorpūjaneyyānaṁ,
thisetaṁ the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Not to fraternize with fools, but to fraternize with the wise, and honoring those worthy of honor: this is the highest blessing.

living in a suitable regionPatirūpadesavāso andca,
in the pastpubbe andca having made meritkatapuññatā;
being rightly resolved in oneselfAttasammāpaṇidhi andca,
thisetaṁ is the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Living in a suitable region, having made merit in the past, being rightly resolved in oneself, this is the highest blessing.

and great learningBāhusaccañca and a craftsippañca,
disciplinevinayo andca well trainedsusikkhito;
well-spokenSubhāsitā andca whichyā speechvācā,
thisetaṁ the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Education and a craft, discipline and training, and well-spoken speech: this is the highest blessing.

caring for mother and fatherMātāpituupaṭṭhānaṁ,
to children and partnerputtadārassa kindnesssaṅgaho;
unstressfulAnākulā andca workkammantā,
thisetaṁ the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Caring for mother and father, kindness to children and partners, and unstressful work: this is the highest blessing.

and givingDānañca righteous conductdhammacariyā andca,
and to relativesñātakānañca kindnesssaṅgaho;
blamelessAnavajjāni deedskammāni,
thisetaṁ the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Giving and righteous conduct, kindness to relatives, blameless deeds: this is the highest blessing.

desistingĀratī abstainingviratī from evilpāpā,
from drinking liquormajjapānā andca avoidingsaṁyamo;
diligenceAppamādo andca in good qualitiesdhammesu,
thisetaṁ highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Desisting and abstaining from evil, avoiding drinking liquor, diligence in good qualities: this is the highest blessing.

respectGāravo andca placiditynivāto andca,
contentmentsantuṭṭhi andca gratitudekataññutā;
timelyKālena listening to the teachingdhammassavanaṁ,
thisetaṁ the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Respect and placidity, contentment and gratitude, and timely listening to the teaching: this is the highest blessing.

patienceKhantī andca being easy to admonishsovacassatā,
and the sight of asceticssamaṇānañca sightdassanaṁ;
in due seasonKālena discussion of the teachingdhammasākacchā,
thisetaṁ the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Patience, being easy to admonish, the sight of ascetics, and timely discussion of the teaching: this is the highest blessing.

fervorTapo andca chastity andbrahmacariyañca,
of the noble truthsariyasaccāna seeingdassanaṁ;
realization of extinguishmentNibbānasacchikiriyā andca,
thisetaṁ the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Fervor and chastity seeing the noble truths, and realization of extinguishment: this is the highest blessing.

of one touchedPhuṭṭhassa by worldly conditionslokadhammehi,
mindcittaṁ of whomyassa notna trembleskampati;
sorrowlessAsokaṁ stainlessvirajaṁ securekhemaṁ,
thisetaṁ is the highest blessingmaṅgalamuttamaṁ.

Though touched by worldly conditions, their mind does not tremble; sorrowless, stainless, secure: this is the highest blessing.

such thingsEtādisāni having donekatvāna,
everywhereSabbattha undefeatedmaparājitā;
everywhereSabbattha in safetysotthiṁ they gogacchanti,
thisTaṁ theirtesaṁ highest blessingmaṅgalamuttaman”ti.

Having completed these things, undefeated everywhere; everywhere they go in safety: this is their highest blessing.”
