thatSo indeedkho Iahaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, whichye thosete cow-pensgoṭṭhā cattle departedpaṭṭhitagāvo cowherds goneapagatagopālakā, theretattha on all fourscatukkuṇḍiko having approachedupasaṅkamitvā whichyāni thosetāni of calvesvacchakānaṁ youngtaruṇakānaṁ sucklingdhenupakānaṁ dunggomayāni thosetāni indeedsudaṁ I ateāhāremi.
and as long asYāvakīvañca myme, Sāriputtasāriputta, ownsakaṁ urine and excrementmuttakarīsaṁ not used upapariyādinnaṁ washoti, my very ownsakaṁyeva indeedsudaṁ urine and excrementmuttakarīsaṁ I ateāhāremi.
such indeedIdaṁsu myme, Sāriputtasāriputta, great unnatural eatingmahāvikaṭabhojanasmiṁ washoti.

thatSo indeedkho Iahaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, a certainaññataraṁ awe-inspiringbhiṁsanakaṁ forest grovevanasaṇḍaṁ having plunged intoajjhogāhetvā I dweltviharāmi.
therein indeedTatrāssudaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, of the awe-inspiringbhiṁsanakassa forest grovevanasaṇḍassa as to its awesomenessbhiṁsanakatasmiṁ it washoti—
whoyo anyonekoci not free of greedavītarāgo thattaṁ forest grovevanasaṇḍaṁ enterspavisati, usuallyyebhuyyena their hairslomāni stand on endhaṁsanti.
thatSo indeedkho Iahaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, whichyā thosetā nightsrattiyo coldsītā wintryhemantikā in the eight-day frostantaraṭṭhakā the time of snowfallhimapātasamayā on suchtathārūpāsu nightsrattīsu by nightrattiṁ in the openabbhokāse I dweltviharāmi, by daydivā in the forest grovevanasaṇḍe;
of summergimhānaṁ in the lastpacchime monthmāse by daydivā in the openabbhokāse I dweltviharāmi, by nightrattiṁ in the forest grovevanasaṇḍe.
and thenApissu to memaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, thisayaṁ unprecedented verseanacchariyagāthā occurredpaṭibhāsi beforepubbe never heard beforeassutapubbā:
scorched‘Sotatto frozensosinno andceva,
aloneeko in the awe-inspiringbhiṁsanake forestvane;
nakedNaggo notna sitting by a firecaggimāsīno,
intent on his questesanāpasuto the sage (quote)munī’ti.

thatSo indeedkho Iahaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, in a charnel groundsusāne a bedseyyaṁ I madekappemi bones of corpseschavaṭṭhikāni using as pillowupadhāya.
and thenApissu to memaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, village boysgāmaṇḍalā having approachedupasaṅkamitvā spat on me andoṭṭhubhantipi, urinated on me andomuttentipi, with dirt toopaṁsukenapi showeredokiranti, even into my earskaṇṇasotesupi twigssalākaṁ pokedpavesenti.
notNa indeedkho yet Ipanāhaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, recallabhijānāmi toward themtesu a badpāpakaṁ thoughtcittaṁ having arouseduppādetā.
such indeedIdaṁsu myme, Sāriputtasāriputta, abiding in equanimityupekkhāvihārasmiṁ washoti.

there areSanti indeedkho nowpana, Sāriputtasāriputta, someeke ascetics and brahminssamaṇabrāhmaṇā of such doctrineevaṁvādino of such viewevaṁdiṭṭhino:
by food‘āhārena purity (quote)suddhī’ti.
theyTe say thusevamāhaṁsu:
on jujubes‘kolehi let us live (quote)yāpemā’ti.
theyTe jujubes tookolampi eatkhādanti, jujube powder tookolacuṇṇampi eatkhādanti, jujube water tookolodakampi drinkpivanti—
many kinds ofanekavihitampi jujube concoctionskolavikatiṁ consumeparibhuñjanti.
I recallAbhijānāmi indeedkho now Ipanāhaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, just a singleekaṁyeva jujubekolaṁ as foodāhāraṁ having eatenāhāritā.
it might beSiyā indeedkho nowpana to youte, Sāriputtasāriputta, this may occurevamassa:
big‘mahā surelynūna at thattena timesamayena the jujubekolo was (quote)ahosī’ti.
notNa indeedkho but thispanetaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, thusevaṁ should be seendaṭṭhabbaṁ.
then tooTadāpi at most this sizeetaparamoyeva the jujubekolo wasahosi just asseyyathāpi nowetarahi.
for thatTassa memayhaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, just a singleekaṁyeva jujubekolaṁ as foodāhāraṁ eatingāhārayato extreme emaciationadhimattakasimānaṁ reachedpatto my bodykāyo washoti.
just asSeyyathāpi indeednāma an eighty-year-old's jointsāsītikapabbāni orvā a dying man's jointskāḷapabbāni orvā; just so indeedevamevassu myme major and minor limbsaṅgapaccaṅgāni becamebhavanti from that little foodtāyevappāhāratāya.
just asSeyyathāpi indeednāma a camel's hoofoṭṭhapadaṁ; just so indeedevamevassu myme bottomānisadaṁ becamehoti from that little foodtāyevappāhāratāya.

thatSo indeedkho Iahaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, the skin of my belly‘udaracchaviṁ I will rub (quote)parimasissāmī’ti the very backbonepiṭṭhikaṇṭakaṁyeva I graspedpariggaṇhāmi, my backbone‘piṭṭhikaṇṭakaṁ I will rub (quote)parimasissāmī’ti the very belly skinudaracchaviṁyeva I graspedpariggaṇhāmi, so much indeedyāvassu myme, Sāriputtasāriputta, belly skinudaracchavi to the backbonepiṭṭhikaṇṭakaṁ stuckallīnā washoti from that little foodtāyevappāhāratāya.
thatSo indeedkho Iahaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, feces‘vaccaṁ orvā urinemuttaṁ orvā I will pass (quote)karissāmī’ti right theretattheva face downavakujjo I fellpapatāmi from that little foodtāyevappāhāratāya.
thatSo indeedkho Iahaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, that verytameva bodykāyaṁ soothingassāsento with my handpāṇinā my limbsgattāni I rubbedanomajjāmi. for thatTassa memayhaṁ, Sāriputtasāriputta, with my handpāṇinā my limbsgattāni as I rubbedanomajjato rotten-rootedpūtimūlāni hairslomāni from my bodykāyasmā fellpatanti from that little foodtāyevappāhāratāya.
