Then those mendicants, approving and agreeing with what Mahākaccāna said, rose from their seats and went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened, adding:

Monks, a monk should investigate in such a way that, as he investigates, his consciousness is not scattered and diffused externally, not fixed internally, and not clinging he would not be agitated. Monks, when consciousness is not scattered and diffused externally, not fixed internally, and one is not agitated by not clinging, there is in the future no origin of birth, aging, death, and suffering. Who then would analyze in detail the meaning of this summary recited by the Blessed One? To us, venerable sir, this occurred: ‘This venerable Mahākaccāna is praised by the Teacher himself and esteemed by wise fellow celibates. The venerable Mahākaccāna is able to analyze in detail the meaning of this summary recited by the Blessed One. What if we were to approach the venerable Mahākaccāna; having approached, we would ask the venerable Mahākaccāna about this matter.’ Then, venerable sir, we approached the venerable Mahākaccāna; having approached, we asked the venerable Mahākaccāna about this matter.

“Mahākaccāna is astute, mendicants, he has great wisdom. If you came to me and asked this question, I would answer it in exactly the same way as Mahākaccāna. That is what it means, and that’s how you should remember it.” That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.
