thusEvaṁ by meme heardsutaṁ—
oneekaṁ timesamayaṁ the Blessed Onebhagavā at Sāvatthīsāvatthiyaṁ was stayingviharati in Jeta's Grovejetavane of Anāthapiṇḍikaanāthapiṇḍikassa in the monasteryārāme.
thereTatra indeedkho the Blessed Onebhagavā the mendicantsbhikkhū addressedāmantesi:
“mendicants”“bhikkhavo”ti.
“Venerable sir”“Bhadante”ti theyte the mendicantsbhikkhū of the Blessed Onebhagavato repliedpaccassosuṁ.
the Blessed OneBhagavā said thisetadavoca:

not“Na, mendicantsbhikkhave, sowernevāpiko seednivāpaṁ sowsnivapati for deermigajātānaṁ:
this‘imaṁ myme seednivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ deermigajātā enjoyingparibhuñjantā long-liveddīghāyukā beautifulvaṇṇavanto longciraṁ for a long timedīghamaddhānaṁ may they liveyāpentū’ti.
thusEvañca indeedkho, mendicantsbhikkhave, sowernevāpiko seednivāpaṁ sowsnivapati for deermigajātānaṁ:
this‘imaṁ myme seednivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ deermigajātā having encroachedanupakhajja recklessmucchitā eatingbhojanāni will enjoybhuñjissanti, having encroachedanupakhajja recklessmucchitā eatingbhojanāni enjoyingbhuñjamānā indulgencemadaṁ will becomeāpajjissanti, indulgentmattā beingsamānā negligencepamādaṁ will becomeāpajjissanti, negligentpamattā beingsamānā able to do what I wantyathākāmakaraṇīyā they will bebhavissanti in thisimasmiṁ seednivāpe’ti.

thereTatra, monksbhikkhave, firstpaṭhamā herd of deermigajātā thatamuṁ seednivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the sowernevāpikassa encroached onanupakhajja recklessmucchitā foodsbhojanāni they atebhuñjiṁsu, theyte theretattha encroached onanupakhajja recklessmucchitā foodsbhojanāni eatingbhuñjamānā indulgencemadaṁ they fell intoāpajjiṁsu, indulgentmattā beingsamānā negligencepamādaṁ they fell intoāpajjiṁsu, negligentpamattā beingsamānā able to be done with as he wishedyathākāmakaraṇīyā they becameahesuṁ of the sowernevāpikassa in thatamusmiṁ seednivāpe.
thus indeedEvañhi theyte, monksbhikkhave, firstpaṭhamā herd of deermigajātā notna they got freeparimucciṁsu of the sowernevāpikassa poweriddhānubhāvā.

thereTatra, monksbhikkhave, a seconddutiyā herd of deermigajātā thusevaṁ thought upsamacintesuṁ:
which‘ye indeedkho thosete firstpaṭhamā herd of deermigajātā thatamuṁ seednivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the sowernevāpikassa encroachinganupakhajja became indulgentmucchitā foodsbhojanāni atebhuñjiṁsu.
TheyTe theretattha encroachinganupakhajja became indulgentmucchitā foodsbhojanāni eatingbhuñjamānā intoxicationmadaṁ fell intoāpajjiṁsu, intoxicatedmattā beingsamānā negligencepamādaṁ fell intoāpajjiṁsu, negligentpamattā beingsamānā subject to the sower's willyathākāmakaraṇīyā becameahesuṁ of the sowernevāpikassa in thatamusmiṁ seednivāpe.
For thusEvañhi thosete firstpaṭhamā herd of deermigajātā notna got freeparimucciṁsu of the sowernevāpikassa from his poweriddhānubhāvā.
Why don'tYannūna wemayaṁ altogethersabbaso from eating the seednivāpabhojanā refrainpaṭivirameyyāma, from dangerous foodbhayabhogā refrainingpaṭiviratā wilderness regionsaraññāyatanāni having ventured intoajjhogāhetvā we should livevihareyyāmā’ti.
TheyTe altogethersabbaso from eating the seednivāpabhojanā refrainedpaṭiviramiṁsu, from dangerous foodbhayabhogā refrainingpaṭiviratā wilderness regionsaraññāyatanāni having ventured intoajjhogāhetvā livedvihariṁsu.
TheirTesaṁ of summergimhānaṁ in the lastpacchime monthmāse, at the exhaustion of grass and watertiṇodakasaṅkhaye, much too thinadhimattakasimānaṁ becomepatto bodykāyo washoti.
TheirTesaṁ much too thinadhimattakasimānaṁ whose bodies had becomepattakāyānaṁ strength and energybalavīriyaṁ declinedparihāyi.
When strength and energyBalavīriye had declinedparihīne that verytameva seednivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the sowernevāpikassa returned topaccāgamiṁsu.
TheyTe theretattha encroachinganupakhajja became indulgentmucchitā foodsbhojanāni atebhuñjiṁsu.

theyTe theretattha having crept inanupakhajja infatuatedmucchitā the foodsbhojanāni eatingbhuñjamānā intoxicationmadaṁ they fell intoāpajjiṁsu, drunkmattā beingsamānā heedlessnesspamādaṁ they fell intoāpajjiṁsu, heedlesspamattā beingsamānā liable to be done as they wishedyathākāmakaraṇīyā they becameahesuṁ of the sowernevāpikassa in thatamusmiṁ baitnivāpe.
and so indeedEvañhi theyte, monksbhikkhave, the second toodutiyāpi herd of deermigajātā notna they got free fromparimucciṁsu of the sowernevāpikassa poweriddhānubhāvā.

thereTatra, monksbhikkhave, thirdtatiyā deer herdmigajātā thusevaṁ thought togethersamacintesuṁ:
which‘ye indeedkho thosete firstpaṭhamā deer herdmigajātā thatamuṁ baitnivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the trappernevāpikassa …pe……pe…
for thusevañhi thosete firstpaṭhamā deer herdmigajātā notna escapedparimucciṁsu of the trappernevāpikassa from psychic poweriddhānubhāvā.
and whichYepi thosete seconddutiyā deer herdmigajātā thusevaṁ thought togethersamacintesuṁ:
which“ye indeedkho thosete firstpaṭhamā deer herdmigajātā thatamuṁ baitnivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the trappernevāpikassa …pe……pe…
for thusevañhi thosete firstpaṭhamā deer herdmigajātā notna escapedparimucciṁsu of the trappernevāpikassa from psychic poweriddhānubhāvā.
why notYannūna wemayaṁ completelysabbaso from bait foodnivāpabhojanā should abstainpaṭivirameyyāma, from fear-producing enjoymentsbhayabhogā having abstainedpaṭiviratā forest dwellingsaraññāyatanāni having enteredajjhogāhetvā should livevihareyyāmā”ti.
thoseTe completelysabbaso from bait foodnivāpabhojanā abstainedpaṭiviramiṁsu, from fear-producing enjoymentsbhayabhogā having abstainedpaṭiviratā forest dwellingsaraññāyatanāni having enteredajjhogāhetvā livedvihariṁsu.
of themTesaṁ of summergimhānaṁ lastpacchime monthmāse in the exhaustion of grass and watertiṇodakasaṅkhaye of very emaciatedadhimattakasimānaṁ attainedpatto bodykāyo becamehoti.
of themTesaṁ of very emaciatedadhimattakasimānaṁ of attained-bodypattakāyānaṁ strength and vigourbalavīriyaṁ declinedparihāyi.
when strength and vigourBalavīriye declinedparihīne that verytameva baitnivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the trappernevāpikassa went back topaccāgamiṁsu.
thoseTe theretattha having crept inanupakhajja stupefiedmucchitā foodsbhojanāni atebhuñjiṁsu.

theyTe theretattha having encroachedanupakhajja stupefiedmucchitā the foodsbhojanāni eatingbhuñjamānā intoxicationmadaṁ they fell intoāpajjiṁsu, intoxicatedmattā beingsamānā negligencepamādaṁ they fell intoāpajjiṁsu, negligentpamattā beingsamānā liable to do as they pleasedyathākāmakaraṇīyā they becameahesuṁ of the sowernevāpikassa in thatamusmiṁ in the seednivāpe.
thus indeedEvañhi theyte even a second timedutiyāpi as deer-birthsmigajātā notna they escapedparimucciṁsu of the sowernevāpikassa from the poweriddhānubhāvā.
why notYannūna wemayaṁ thatamuṁ the seednivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the sowernevāpikassa depending onupanissāya lairāsayaṁ we would set upkappeyyāma.
there a lairTatrāsayaṁ having set upkappetvā thatamuṁ the seednivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the sowernevāpikassa without encroachingananupakhajja not stupefiedamucchitā the foodsbhojanāni we shall eatbhuñjissāma, without encroachingananupakhajja not stupefiedamucchitā the foodsbhojanāni eatingbhuñjamānā notna intoxicationmadaṁ we shall fall intoāpajjissāma, not intoxicatedamattā beingsamānā notna negligencepamādaṁ we shall fall intoāpajjissāma, not negligentappamattā beingsamānā notna liable to do as they pleasedyathākāmakaraṇīyā we shall bebhavissāma of the sowernevāpikassa in thatamusmiṁ in the seednivāpe’ti.
theyTe thatamuṁ the seednivāpaṁ sownnivuttaṁ of the sowernevāpikassa depending onupanissāya lairāsayaṁ they set upkappayiṁsu.
