of such kindEvarūpena indeedkho, friendāvuso Sāriputtasāriputta, by a bhikkhubhikkhunā Gosiṅga·sal·forestgosiṅgasālavanaṁ would gracesobheyyā’”ti.

“‘Ānanda, the sal forest park at Gosiṅga is lovely, the night is bright, the sal trees are in full blossom, and heavenly scents seem to float on the air. What kind of mendicant would grace this park?’ When I had spoken, Ānanda said to me: ‘Reverend Sāriputta, it’s a mendicant who is very learned … That’s the kind of mendicant who would grace this park.’” “Good, good, Sāriputta! Ānanda answered in the right way for him.

ĀnandaĀnando indeedhi, Sāriputtasāriputta, very learnedbahussuto bearer of the teachingssutadharo one with a store of teachingssutasannicayo. whichYe thosete teachingsdhammā lovely in the beginningādikalyāṇā lovely in the middlemajjhekalyāṇā lovely in the endpariyosānakalyāṇā with meaningsātthā with phrasingsabyañjanā; completely perfectkevalaparipuṇṇaṁ wholly purifiedparisuddhaṁ holy lifebrahmacariyaṁ they proclaimabhivadanti, of such a kind to himtathārūpāssa teachingsdhammā much heardbahussutā they arehonti, retaineddhātā, by speechvacasā familiarizedparicitā, mentally examinedmanasānupekkhitā, by viewdiṭṭhiyā well penetratedsuppaṭividdhā.
heSo of the fourcatassannaṁ assembliesparisānaṁ the teachingdhammaṁ teachesdeseti with well-roundedparimaṇḍalehi phrases and expressionspadabyañjanehi with continuityanuppabandhehi for the removal of latent tendenciesanusayasamugghātāyā”ti.

For Ānanda is very learned …”

nowTattha thendāni wemayaṁ venerableāyasmantaṁ Revatarevataṁ askpucchāma—
delightfulramaṇīyaṁ, friendāvuso Revatarevata, Gosiṅga sal grovegosiṅgasālavanaṁ, cleardosinā nightratti, all·blossom·blossomedsabbaphāliphullā sal treessālā, heavenlydibbā it seemsmaññe fragrancesgandhā driftsampavanti.
by what kindKathaṁrūpena, friendāvuso Revatarevata, by a bhikkhubhikkhunā Gosiṅga sal grovegosiṅgasālavanaṁ would gracesobheyyā’ti?
thusEvaṁ when saidvutte, sirbhante, venerableāyasmā Revatarevato memaṁ said thisetadavoca:
here friend‘idhāvuso Sāriputtasāriputta, a bhikkhubhikkhu retreat·delightingpaṭisallānārāmo ishoti devoted to retreatpaṭisallānarato, internallyajjhattaṁ pursuing serenity of mindcetosamathamanuyutto, not neglecting jhānaanirākatajjhāno, with insightvipassanāya endowedsamannāgato, one who frequentsbrūhetā of empty dwellingssuññāgārānaṁ.
by suchEvarūpena indeedkho, friendāvuso Sāriputtasāriputta, by a bhikkhubhikkhunā Gosiṅga sal grovegosiṅgasālavanaṁ would gracesobheyyā’”ti.

asYathā thattaṁ Revata·indeedrevatova rightlysammā out·doingbyākaramāno would answerbyākareyya.
RevataRevato indeedhi, Sāriputtasāriputta, one who delights in retreatpaṭisallānārāmo devoted to retreatpaṭisallānarato, internallyajjhattaṁ pursuing serenity of mindcetosamathamanuyutto not neglecting jhānaanirākatajjhāno, with insightvipassanāya endowedsamannāgato one who frequentsbrūhetā of empty dwellingssuññāgārānan”ti.

“Next I asked Revata the same question. He said: ‘It’s a mendicant who enjoys retreat … That’s the kind of mendicant who would grace this park.’” “Good, good, Sāriputta! Revata answered in the right way for him. For Revata enjoys retreat …”

AnuruddhaAnuruddho forhi, Sāriputtasāriputta, with divinedibbena with the eyecakkhunā purifiedvisuddhena beyond·surpass·humanatikkantamānusakena thousandfoldsahassaṁ of worldslokānaṁ down·see·quotevoloketī”ti.

“Next I asked Anuruddha the same question. He said: ‘It’s a mendicant who surveys the thousandfold galaxy with clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human … That’s the kind of mendicant who would grace this park.’” “Good, good, Sāriputta! Anuruddha answered in the right way for him. For Anuruddha surveys the thousandfold galaxy with clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human.”

‘It’s a mendicant who lives in the wilderness … and is accomplished in the knowledge and vision of freedom; and they praise these things. That’s the kind of mendicant who would grace this park.’” “Good, good, Sāriputta! Kassapa answered in the right way for him.
