thusEvaṁ when saidvutte, venerable sirbhante, venerableāyasmā Mahāmoggallānamahāmoggallāno memaṁ said thisetadavoca:
here, friend‘idhāvuso Sāriputtasāriputta, twodve mendicantsbhikkhū talk on the higher teachingabhidhammakathaṁ engage inkathenti. theyTe each otheraññamaññaṁ a questionpañhaṁ askpucchanti, of each otheraññamaññassa a questionpañhaṁ when askedpuṭṭhā answervissajjenti, notno andca become stucksaṁsādenti, righteousdhammī andca theirnesaṁ talkkathā proceedingpavattinī ishoti.
by such a kindEvarūpena indeedkho, friendāvuso Sāriputtasāriputta, by a mendicantbhikkhunā Gosiṅga Sāla Woodgosiṅgasālavanaṁ would gracesobheyyā’”ti.
good“Sādhu goodsādhu, Sāriputtasāriputta, asyathā thattaṁ Moggallāna himselfmoggallānova rightlysammā answeringbyākaramāno would answerbyākareyya.
MoggallānaMoggallāno forhi, Sāriputtasāriputta, a Dhamma speakerdhammakathiko”ti.

thusEvaṁ when spokenvutte, venerableāyasmā Mahāmoggallānamahāmoggallāno the Blessed Onebhagavantaṁ said thisetadavoca:
then“atha indeed Ikhvāhaṁ, reverend sirbhante, venerableāyasmantaṁ Sāriputtasāriputtaṁ said thisetadavocaṁ:
declared‘byākataṁ indeedkho, friendāvuso Sāriputtasāriputta, by usamhehi all of us indeedsabbeheva according to our ownyathāsakaṁ inspirationpaṭibhānaṁ.
thereTattha nowdāni wemayaṁ venerableāyasmantaṁ Sāriputtasāriputtaṁ we askpucchāma—
lovelyramaṇīyaṁ, friendāvuso Sāriputtasāriputta, sal forest at Gosiṅgagosiṅgasālavanaṁ, brightdosinā nightratti, all in full blossomsabbaphāliphullā sal treessālā, heavenlydibbā, it seemsmaññe, scentsgandhā float on the airsampavanti.

thusEvaṁ when spokenvutte, reverend sirbhante, venerableāyasmā Sāriputtasāriputto to memaṁ said thisetadavoca:
here, friend‘idhāvuso Moggallānamoggallāna, a mendicantbhikkhu mindcittaṁ controlvasaṁ mastersvatteti notno andca a mendicantbhikkhu of the mindcittassa by the controlvasena is masteredvattati.
heSo in whichyāya meditative attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati in the morningpubbaṇhasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, in thattāya meditative attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā in the morningpubbaṇhasamayaṁ dwellsviharati;
in whichyāya meditative attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati at middaymajjhanhikasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, in thattāya meditative attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā at middaymajjhanhikasamayaṁ dwellsviharati;
in whichyāya meditative attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati in the eveningsāyanhasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, in thattāya meditative attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā in the eveningsāyanhasamayaṁ dwellsviharati.

just asSeyyathāpi, friendāvuso Moggallānamoggallāna, of a kingrañño or of a royal ministerrājamahāmattassa or of various-colorednānārattānaṁ of clothsdussānaṁ a clothes chestdussakaraṇḍako fullpūro might beassa.
heSo whateveryaññadeva pair of clothesdussayugaṁ might wishākaṅkheyya in the morningpubbaṇhasamayaṁ to wearpārupituṁ, thattaṁ that verytadeva pair of clothesdussayugaṁ in the morningpubbaṇhasamayaṁ might wearpārupeyya;
whateveryaññadeva pair of clothesdussayugaṁ might wishākaṅkheyya at middaymajjhanhikasamayaṁ to wearpārupituṁ, thattaṁ that verytadeva pair of clothesdussayugaṁ at middaymajjhanhikasamayaṁ might wearpārupeyya;
whateveryaññadeva pair of clothesdussayugaṁ might wishākaṅkheyya in the eveningsāyanhasamayaṁ to wearpārupituṁ, thattaṁ that verytadeva pair of clothesdussayugaṁ in the eveningsāyanhasamayaṁ might wearpārupeyya.
just soEvameva indeedkho, friendāvuso Moggallānamoggallāna, a mendicantbhikkhu mindcittaṁ under controlvasaṁ wieldsvatteti, notno andca a mendicantbhikkhu of mindcittassa under the powervasena proceedsvattati.
heSo by whichyāya dwelling attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati in the morningpubbaṇhasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, by thattāya dwelling attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā in the morningpubbaṇhasamayaṁ dwellsviharati;
by whichyāya dwelling attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati at middaymajjhanhikasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, by thattāya dwelling attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā at middaymajjhanhikasamayaṁ dwellsviharati;
by whichyāya dwelling attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati in the eveningsāyanhasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, by thattāya dwelling attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā in the eveningsāyanhasamayaṁ dwellsviharati.
of such kindEvarūpena indeedkho, friendāvuso Moggallānamoggallāna, by a mendicantbhikkhunā the Gosiṅga sal tree woodgosiṅgasālavanaṁ would gracesobheyyā’”ti.

SāriputtaSāriputto forhi, Moggallānamoggallāna, mindcittaṁ powervasaṁ mastersvatteti notno andca Sāriputtasāriputto of mindcittassa by powervasena is turnedvattati.
heSo by whichyāya dwelling-attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati morning timepubbaṇhasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, by thattāya dwelling-attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā morning timepubbaṇhasamayaṁ dwellsviharati;
by whichyāya dwelling-attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati midday timemajjhanhikasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, by thattāya dwelling-attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā midday timemajjhanhikasamayaṁ dwellsviharati;
by whichyāya dwelling-attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā wishesākaṅkhati evening timesāyanhasamayaṁ to dwellviharituṁ, by thattāya dwelling-attainmentvihārasamāpattiyā evening timesāyanhasamayaṁ dwellsviharatī”ti.

thusEvaṁ when spokenvutte, venerableāyasmā Sāriputtasāriputto the Buddhabhagavantaṁ said thisetadavoca:
of whom“kassa thennu indeedkho, sirbhante, well spoken?subhāsitan”ti?
of all“Sabbesaṁ yourvo, Sāriputtasāriputta, well spokensubhāsitaṁ in a mannerpariyāyena.
butApi andca me alsomamapi listensuṇātha of what kindyathārūpena mendicantbhikkhunā Gosiṅga sal forestgosiṅgasālavanaṁ would gracesobheyya.
hereIdha, Sāriputtasāriputta, a mendicantbhikkhu after the mealpacchābhattaṁ returned from almsroundpiṇḍapātapaṭikkanto sits downnisīdati cross-leggedpallaṅkaṁ having foldedābhujitvā uprightujuṁ bodykāyaṁ having establishedpaṇidhāya to the foreparimukhaṁ mindfulnesssatiṁ having set upupaṭṭhapetvā:
not‘na so long Itāvāhaṁ thisimaṁ cross-legged posturepallaṅkaṁ I will breakbhindissāmi untilyāva myme by not graspingnānupādāya from defilementsāsavehi mindcittaṁ will be freedvimuccissatī’ti.
of such kindEvarūpena indeedkho, Sāriputtasāriputta, mendicantbhikkhunā Gosiṅga sal forestgosiṅgasālavanaṁ would grace."sobheyyā”ti.

satisfiedAttamanā thosete venerablesāyasmanto of the Buddhabhagavato speechbhāsitaṁ approvedabhinandunti.
