So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Now at that time a mendicant named Sāti, the fisherman’s son, had the following harmful misconception: “As I understand the Buddha’s teaching, it is this very same consciousness that roams and transmigrates, not another.”

Several mendicants heard this rumour. They went up to Sāti and said to him, “Is it really true, Reverend Sāti, that you have such a harmful misconception: ‘As I understand the Buddha’s teaching, it is this very same consciousness that roams and transmigrates, not another’?” “Indeed, reverends. As I understand the Buddha’s teaching, it is this very same consciousness that roams and transmigrates, not another.” Then, wishing to dissuade Sāti from his view, the mendicants pursued, pressed, and grilled him,

“Don’t say that, Sāti! Don’t misrepresent the Buddha, for misrepresentation of the Buddha is not good. And the Buddha would not say that. In many ways the Buddha has said that consciousness is dependently originated, that without a cause, consciousness does not come to be.” But even though the mendicants pressed him in this way, Sāti obstinately stuck to his misconception and insisted on it.

“Thus I understand the teaching taught by the Blessed One: that it is this very same consciousness that runs on and wanders on, not another’?” When this was said, venerable sir, the monk Sāti, son of Kevaṭṭa, said this to us: “Indeed, friends, thus I understand the teaching taught by the Blessed One: that it is this very same consciousness that runs on and wanders on, not another.” Then, venerable sir, wishing to dissuade the monk Sāti, son of Kevaṭṭa, from that evil wrong view, we questioned him, pressed him, and admonished him: “Do not speak thus, friend Sāti. Do not misrepresent the Blessed One, for it is not good to falsely accuse the Blessed One, for the Blessed One would not say so. In many ways, friend Sāti, consciousness is said by the Blessed One to be dependently arisen; apart from a condition there is no arising of consciousness.” But even so, venerable sir, the monk Sāti, son of Kevaṭṭa, being questioned, pressed, and admonished by us, stubbornly grasping that very evil wrong view and adhering to it, declared:

“Thus, friend, I understand the doctrine taught by the Blessed One: it is this very consciousness that runs on and wanders on, not another.” Since we, venerable sir, were unable to dissuade the monk Sāti, son of a fisherman, from this evil wrong view, then we reported this matter to the Blessed One.
