now it is time for you“Yassadāni youtvaṁ, Pessapessa, timekālaṁ you thinkmaññasī”ti.
thenAtha indeedkho Pessapesso elephant marshal's sonhatthārohaputto of the Blessed Onebhagavato speechbhāsitaṁ having approvedabhinanditvā having agreedanumoditvā having risen from his seatuṭṭhāyāsanā the Blessed Onebhagavantaṁ having bowedabhivādetvā respectfully circlingpadakkhiṇaṁ having donekatvā he leftpakkāmi.

thenAtha indeedkho the Blessed Onebhagavā not long after he had leftacirapakkante Pessapesse the elephant marshal's sonhatthārohaputte the mendicantsbhikkhū he addressed:āmantesi:
"astute,“paṇḍito, mendicants,bhikkhave, Pessapesso the elephant marshal's son;hatthārohaputto;
of great wisdom,mahāpañño, mendicants,bhikkhave, Pessapesso the elephant marshal's son.hatthārohaputto.
If,Sace, mendicants,bhikkhave, Pessapesso the elephant marshal's sonhatthārohaputto an hourmuhuttaṁ would sitnisīdeyya as long as Iyāvassāhaṁ theseime fourcattāro individualspuggale in detailvitthārena would analyzevibhajissāmi, with greatmahatā benefitatthena connectedsaṁyutto he would have beenabhavissa.
StillApi but,ca, mendicants,bhikkhave, even with this muchettāvatāpi Pessapesso the elephant marshal's sonhatthārohaputto with greatmahatā benefitatthena connected"saṁyutto”ti.
"For this,“Etassa, Blessed One,bhagavā, it is the time,kālo, for this,etassa, Holy One,sugata, it is the time,kālo,
thatyaṁ the Blessed Onebhagavā theseime fourcattāro individualspuggale in detailvitthārena should analyze.vibhajeyya. Having heard from the Blessed OneBhagavato having heardsutvā the mendicantsbhikkhū will remember"dhāressantī”ti.
"Well then,“Tena then,hi, mendicants,bhikkhave, listen,suṇātha, wellsādhukaṁ apply your mindmanasi do,karotha, I will speak"bhāsissāmī”ti.
"Yes,“Evaṁ, sir,"bhante”ti indeedkho thosete mendicantsbhikkhū to the Blessed Onebhagavato replied.paccassosuṁ.
The Blessed OneBhagavā said this:etadavoca:

what“Katamo andca, monksbhikkhave, individualpuggalo self-mortifyingattantapo committed to the practice of mortifying themselvesattaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto? hereIdha, monksbhikkhave, a certainekacco individualpuggalo goes nakedacelako ishoti of loose habitsmuttācāro licking the handshatthāpalekhano does not come when callednaehibhaddantiko does not wait when callednatiṭṭhabhaddantiko; food brought to themnābhihaṭaṁ notna food prepared for themuddissakataṁ notna an invitationnimantanaṁ they consent tosādiyati;
theyso notna from a potkumbhimukhā receivepaṭiggaṇhāti notna from a bowlkaḷopimukhā receivepaṭiggaṇhāti notna from someone who keeps sheepeḷakamantaraṁ notna from someone with a weapondaṇḍamantaraṁ notna from someone with a shovelmusalamantaraṁ notna of twodvinnaṁ eatingbhuñjamānānaṁ notna from a pregnant womangabbhiniyā notna from a breastfeeding womanpāyamānāya notna from a woman living with a manpurisantaragatāya notna where there is a houndsaṅkittīsu notna whereyattha there waitingupaṭṭhito ishoti notna whereyattha fliesmakkhikā buzzing aroundsaṇḍasaṇḍacārinī; notna fishmacchaṁ notna meatmaṁsaṁ notna beersuraṁ notna winemerayaṁ notna fermented gruelthusodakaṁ they drinkpivati.
theySo one-houseekāgāriko or arehoti one-mouthfulekālopiko, two-housedvāgāriko or arehoti two-mouthfuldvālopiko omission…pe… seven-housesattāgāriko or arehoti seven-mouthfulsattālopiko;
even one saucerekissāpi with a saucerdattiyā they feedyāpeti, even two saucersdvīhipi with saucersdattīhi they feedyāpeti omission…pe… even seven saucerssattahipi with saucersdattīhi they feedyāpeti;

even one-dayekāhikampi foodāhāraṁ eatsāhāreti, even two-daydvīhikampi foodāhāraṁ eatsāhāreti and so on…pe… even seven-daysattāhikampi foodāhāraṁ eats—thusāhāreti—iti suchevarūpaṁ fortnightlyaḍḍhamāsikaṁ committed to the practice of eating only at set intervalspariyāyabhattabhojanānuyogamanuyutto livesviharati.
heSo eating vegetablessākabhakkho or ishoti, eating milletsāmākabhakkho or ishoti, eating wild ricenīvārabhakkho or ishoti, eating poor ricedaddulabhakkho or ishoti, eating water lettucehaṭabhakkho or ishoti, eating rice brankaṇabhakkho or ishoti, eating rice scumācāmabhakkho or ishoti, eating sesame flourpiññākabhakkho or ishoti, eating grasstiṇabhakkho or ishoti, eating cow dunggomayabhakkho or ishoti; eating forest roots and fruitsvanamūlaphalāhāro survivesyāpeti eating fallen fruitpavattaphalabhojī.
heSo sunn hemp robes toosāṇānipi wearsdhāreti, mixed hemp robes toomasāṇānipi wearsdhāreti, corpse-wrapping cloth robes toochavadussānipi wearsdhāreti, rag robes toopaṁsukūlānipi wearsdhāreti, lodh tree bark robes tootirīṭānipi wearsdhāreti, antelope hide tooajinampi wearsdhāreti, antelope-hide strips tooajinakkhipampi wearsdhāreti, kusa grass robes tookusacīrampi wearsdhāreti, bark robes toovākacīrampi wearsdhāreti, wood-chip robes toophalakacīrampi wearsdhāreti, human-hair blanket tookesakambalampi wearsdhāreti, horse-tail hair blanket toovāḷakambalampi wearsdhāreti, owls' wings tooulūkapakkhampi wearsdhāreti;
hair-and-beard pulling out tookesamassulocakopi ishoti, committed to the practice of pulling out hair and beardkesamassulocanānuyogamanuyutto,
constantly standing tooubbhaṭṭhakopi ishoti turning down seatsāsanapaṭikkhitto,
squatting tooukkuṭikopi ishoti committed to the endeavor of squattingukkuṭikappadhānamanuyutto,
lying on a thorn mat tookaṇṭakāpassayikopi ishoti on a thorn matkaṇṭakāpassaye bedseyyaṁ makeskappeti;
dusk third toosāyatatiyakampi committed to the practice of water-immersionudakorohanānuyogamanuyutto lives—viharati—
thusiti suchevarūpaṁ variousanekavihitaṁ of the bodykāyassa committed to the practice of mortifying and tormentingātāpanaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto lives.viharati.
