infinitive (with enclitic iti); āpajjati (3rd singular present)
Analysis. āpajjituṃ + iti: infinitive marker iti attached; āpajjituṃ is the accusative infinitive form of āpajjati, used here as a quotative particle meaning 'saying (that one will)...'
Etymology. ā + pajjati: ā- (toward) + pajjati (√pad 'fall, befall'), literally 'befalls one', whence 'happens to, experiences'. The root pad is cognate with English 'fall', Latin 'pes' (foot, as what descends), Sanskrit padyate. The prefix ā reverses the sense of motion from the subject's perspective (toward the speaker's situation).
