masc nom sg of āpanna (pp)
Etymology. ā + √pad. The prefix ā reverses the direction of motion: √pad 'to go, fall' normally looks away from the speaker, but ā turns it back toward and into a state or condition. Cognate with Sanskrit āpad- 'misfortune, calamity' and Latin pedis 'foot' (√ped in Indo-European). The sense 'fallen into' reflects the literal collision: to fall into a pit or condition.
