Etymology. From abhi- (toward, facing, bearing down on) + √bhā (shine, speak); the root bhā carries both 'shine' (as light bearing down on something) and 'speak' (utterance directed outward). Cognate with Latin fābula (speech, story) and Sanskrit bhāṣati (speaks), both from the same Indo-European root *bh(e)h₂- 'shine, speak'. The prefix abhi- gives the sense of utterance directed toward an audience or a clear radiance emanating outward.
