Etymology. a- (prefix, "not") + jāna (present stem of jānāti, "knows"). The root √jñā (Sanskrit jñāna "knowledge") is cognate with Greek γι-γνώσκω (gignōskō "I know") and English "know" (PIE *ǵen- "to know, perceive"). The privative a- negates the root's sense of knowing or awareness.
