Etymology. a- (not, without) + māyā (deceit, fraud) + -vin (agent suffix, forming adjectives "one who does"). The root māyā is cognate with Sanskrit māyā, originally "artificial contrivance, illusion"; the a- prefix simply negates it. One without deceit; in doctrinal usage, amāyāvī denotes the honest practitioner free from hypocrisy (sakkaraṇa), a quality prized in the sangha.
