anāgatamaddhānaṃ

ind. (indeclinable adverbial phrase)

  1. in the future; lit. future time

Built from

Analysis. anāgata (future, not-come) + maddhāna (time, middle) + iti (quotative particle); literally 'in future-time', used as a temporal adverbial.

Etymology. anāgata: an- (not) + āgata (come, from ā- reversing √gam 'go'); maddhāna from majjhe 'middle' with -āna suffix; iti marks quoted speech or cited forms. The prefix an- is the negation seen in English un-, Greek a(n)-; ā- reverses the direction of √gam, turning it from 'going' to 'coming toward the speaker', as in āgacchati. Maddhāna 'middle time' is the medial location reanalyzed temporally.
