Analysis. an- (not) + anuyutta (yoked alongside, devoted), from anu- (along, following) + yutta (yoked, p.p. of yunati 'yokes'). Literally 'not yoked alongside', i.e. not engaged with or committed to a practice.
Etymology. From a- (not) + anuyutta. The root yu- (yoke, join) is cognate with Sanskrit yuj- and English yoke, German Joch; anu- carries the sense of 'along, following the track of', so anuyutta is one who has been yoked together with (following along with) a discipline or practice. The negation a- strips away that commitment.
