Analysis. an- + ti + mānī; 'not' + 'crossing over' + 'thinking/esteeming', hence 'not going beyond measure in one's self-regard'

Etymology. Prefixed a- (not) + ti (from ati, 'beyond, over the mark', from Indo-European *eti-, cognate with Greek eti 'still, besides') + mānī (from √man 'think, esteem', cognate with Latin mēns 'mind', English 'mean'). The compound reverses ati-mānī ('excess pride, conceit') by negation: one who does not transgress the mark in self-regard.
