masc nom sg of anattantapa (adj)
Analysis. an- (without) + attan- (self) + tapa (austerity, torment); literally 'without self-torment', describing one who does not practice extreme asceticism.
Etymology. Formed from the prefix a- (not, without) + attan (self; from attā, cognate with Sanskrit ātman and English 'I', from the reflexive pronoun) + tapa (heat, austerity, from √tap 'to burn, heat'). The compound opposes the extreme ascetic practices condemned by the Buddha in favour of the Middle Way.
