Analysis. an- (without) + avasésa (remainder) + dohī (milking, feminine agent noun from √duh 'to milk'). 'One who milks with no remainder': the milker who leaves nothing behind. In the canon, applied to one greedy for or unrestrained in accepting alms-food and requisites.
Etymology. Compound of a-vasésa 'without remainder' (a- negation + vasésa from √vas 'dwell, remain') and dohī 'milker' (feminine agent from √duh 'milk', cognate with English 'dairy', Greek θήγειν 'to sharpen'). The prefix an- (before vowel of avasésa) is the regular Pali form of a- 'not, without'.
