masc nom sg of anuruddha (noun); masc nom sg of anuruddha (pp)
Analysis. anu- (along, following) + ruddha (past participle of √rudh, blocked/obstructed); literally 'followed along, unobstructed', hence 'unhindered, favoured'. As a name, it denotes the monk whose practice flowed without obstacle.
Etymology. √rudh (to block, obstruct; Sanskrit rudh, English 'rude' in the sense of 'crude/rough' derives from blocking action; compare Latin rudis 'rough, unformed'). The prefix anu- (following the track of, along after) reverses the sense: what is followed unobstructed becomes what flows freely, what is favoured. The divine eye (dibbacakkhu) attributed to Anuruddha in the canon exemplifies this unobstructed vision.
