Etymology. apa- (away, off; cognate with Greek apo-, Latin ab-, English off) + -ra (comparative suffix); literally 'further away', hence 'other, another'. Cognate with Sanskrit apara. The prefix apa- preserves the concrete sense of spatial separation that extends to temporal distance ('later, subsequent').
