Etymology. From a- (not, without) + rahati (to stay, remain, linger): literally 'one who does not remain/linger', i.e. does not linger in the round of rebirth. Cognate imagery parallels English 'away' (from weg- 'to move'): motion away from the cycle. The Pali semanticization emphasizes the one who has departed from saṃsāra.
