masc nom sg of ariṭṭha (noun); masc nom sg of ariṭṭha (adj)
Etymology. a- (not) + riṭṭha (past participle of rindati, to hurt or wound); literally 'not hurt'. The root is cognate with Sanskrit riṇaddhi 'tears, rends', Latin rindere 'to tear', and English 'rend'. The semantic shift from physical 'unhurt' to the inauspicious sense (as in the name of the misguided monk Ariṭṭha) arises through ironic or contextual usage — what appears 'unharmed' may be deceptively fortunate or ill-fated.
