Etymology. From Indo-European *ar- 'to fit, join, arrange', seen in Sanskrit ārya 'noble, Aryan' and Greek arestós 'pleasing, suitable'. The root sense is 'one who is fit or properly arranged'; applied to the Aryan-speaking peoples and their languages, then to the Buddha and his disciples as those who fit or belong to the noble path.
