ind (indeclinable particle)
Etymology. An old adverb of temporal and logical sequence, possibly related to Sanskrit atha and Proto-Indo-European *a-the- (at that point). The sense 'then' marks the moment when something begins or follows; compare the temporal use in narrative openings such as 'Atha kho bhagavā…' (And then the Blessed One…). No certain cognate in European languages, though the particle may share distant kinship with Greek demonstratives marking sequence.
