Etymology. From bhāga 'share, portion' (cognate with Sanskrit bhāga-, related to √bhaj 'to divide, distribute', itself connected to Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵ- 'to share out, allot'). The agent suffix -in (-ī in nom sg masc) marks 'one who shares' from the root sense of apportionment.
