Etymology. From √bhāṣ (bhās-), meaning 'to speak, shine forth'; cognate with Sanskrit bhāṣ- and related to the Indo-European root *bʰeh₂- 'to shine, speak' (English 'base', Latin 'basis' in the sense of 'foundation' from which speech issues). The -ita suffix marks the past participle, 'what has been spoken'.
