Etymology. From bhāvayati, causative of bhavati (√bhū 'to be, become'). The causative suffix -ya- turns 'to be' into 'to make to be' or 'to cause to be', hence 'to cultivate' in the sense of bringing into being or strengthening. Cognate with Sanskrit bhāvayati; related to English 'be' and Latin 'fui' from Indo-European *bʰuH-.
