Etymology. From √bhū (to be, become; cognate with English *be*, German *bin*, Sanskrit *bhavati*). The past participle bhāvita = causative stem bhāv- + -ita (made into, caused to be). Bhāvita literally means 'caused to be' or 'made to come into being', hence 'cultivated' or 'developed' when applied to mental qualities or practices.
