Built from
- bhū — root · be, become
The verbal root meaning 'to exist or come into being.' Cognate with English be, Latin fui (past of esse), Sanskrit bhavati, Greek phyein 'to grow, be born.' The root is the semantic core of all becoming and existence in Pali.
- ta — ending · past participle
The -ta suffix forms a past participle from the root, here signifying 'that which has become' or 'that which is.' In nominal use, bhūta shifts from the verbal sense 'become' to the adjectival/nominal sense 'a being' or 'an entity.'
Etymology. √bhū 'to be, become': cognate with English be, Sanskrit bhavati, Latin fui, Greek phyein. The past participle bhūta literally 'become, come to be' comes to mean 'existing, real' and then 'a being' or 'an entity.' In Buddhist doctrine, bhūta denotes the elemental constituents of existence (e.g. mahābhūta, 'the great elements': earth, water, fire, wind).
