Etymology. From Indo-European *bʰendʰ- 'to bind, tie together', whence Sanskrit bhadra 'fortunate, auspicious'. The root sense is 'that which binds together' or 'holds firm', hence stability, security, and the good fortune attending them. Cognate with English bind, band, bond (all from the same IE root).
