genitive plural of bhikkhu (masculine)
Etymology. From Sanskrit bhikṣu, ultimately from the root bhikṣ- 'to beg'; the term was adopted for Buddhist monastics who lived by almsgiving. No direct European cognate, but semantically parallel to mendicant (from Latin mendīcāre 'to beg').
