brāhmaṇaṁ

brāhmaṇa

accusative singular masculine of brāhmaṇa (noun)

  1. brahmin, member of the priestly class
  2. a person of high birth or learning

Etymology. Sanskrit brāhmaṇa, from brahman (the Absolute, divine reality); ultimately from the Indo-European root *bher- 'to bear, carry' or related to *gwerbh- 'to turn, twist', referring to the priestly power to speak and maintain sacred utterance. In the Pali canon, the term is sometimes contrasted with the Buddha's teaching that true brahmin status comes through conduct and wisdom rather than birth.
