  5. epithet of the Buddha; lit. god

Etymology. From Indo-European *bʰerəǵʰ- 'to grow, expand, be high', which generated Sanskrit bṛhat 'great, vast' and Greek phérō 'I bear, grow'. The root sense of expansion and growth underlies both the cosmic principle (Brahman as that which grows or expands infinitely) and the adjective sense 'long, extended'. In Vedic thought, Brahmā became the name of the creator god; in Buddhist usage, it denotes celestial beings and, honorifically, the Buddha himself as the supreme or 'greatly-grown' one.
