Etymology. A proclitic conjunction from Proto-Indo-European *kwe, the same root as Latin que (in-que), Sanskrit ca, Greek te (in Homeric Greek, especially in the formula 'te...te' for 'both...and'). The particle attaches to the preceding word like Latin -que, marking coordination and togetherness. It is one of the oldest coordinators in Indo-European languages.
