Analysis. cakkhuṃ (eye, accusative) + ca (and); the accusative is used before the enclitic conjunction in paratactic compounds. Literal: 'eye and', used to coordinate cakkhu with preceding or following terms in lists of faculties or perceptual modes.

Etymology. From √cakṣ (Sanskrit cakṣus, cakṣī), 'to see, perceive': cognate with English gaze (through PIE *gʷeh₂-), and with Greek (k)askos, and Sanskrit cakṣus. The root imagery is 'discernment through looking', extending from physical sight (eye organ) to mental and spiritual insight. The stem cakkhu is the Pali reflex of Sanskrit cakṣu-; the initial consonant cluster in Sanskrit cakṣ- was reduced to ck- in Pali through regular phonetic change.
