masc nom sg of chanda (noun); masc nom sg of chandas (noun); masc acc sg of chandas (noun)
Etymology. From √chand 'to delight, be pleased'; cognate with Sanskrit chandas and chanda, from the Indo-European root *kʰend- 'to grasp, seize' (English: can, could; German: können). The semantic path moves from 'grasping' or 'taking hold of' to 'willing' to 'desiring'. In canonical usage, chanda is a key component of viriya (effort) and a vehicle for kusala (wholesome) action when directed toward the Dhamma.
