Etymology. From PIE *skeṷ- 'to cover, hide': related to Sanskrit chāyā 'shadow; protection', Greek skeuē 'equipment; hide', English 'sky' and 'shade'. The root sense 'covered; hidden' evolved toward 'what is left behind; remains' and thence 'corpse'. Also cognate with Sanskrit chāva 'corpse'.
