Etymology. From √chid 'cut, sever' — cognate with Latin caedere (cīs-ōr 'cutter'), Greek khdos (perhaps), and English 'hew'. The root is ancient Indo-European *skey- 'to cut, whittle', which also appears in Sanskrit छिद् (chid-) and Greek σχίζειν (schízein) 'split'. The present participle form shows the vivid, ongoing action of cutting or severing, commonly used in the Canon to describe the destruction of craving and ignorance.
