Etymology. Past participle of codeti, from √cod (cognate with Latin caudex 'tree trunk', originally 'something struck or driven'; English 'code' in the sense of 'struck record'). The root's concrete sense of 'striking, driving' shifted to 'spurring on' and hence 'accusing' or 'charging'. Related to Sanskrit codayati.
