Etymology. Related to Sanskrit dṛḍha, from Indo-European *dher- 'to hold, support' (English dare, English thread, Latin firmus). The shift from *dr- to Pali dl- reflects regular phonetic change. Cognate with Greek thronos 'seat' (something held firm) and Latin firmus 'firm'.
