Etymology. From a root meaning 'to strike' or 'pointed instrument'; possibly related to Latin dent- (tooth, a pointed thing) and English dent, though the connection is obscure. The word entered doctrinal use metaphorically: a stick as an instrument of punishment came to mean punishment itself, and in Jain philosophy, kamma as the 'stick' that strikes one with its consequences.
