  3. violence (towards); lit. stick

Etymology. From Indo-European *dhen-g- 'to strike, hit' (cognate with Sanskrit daṇḍa, Avestan dańg-, and distantly with English ding, dent). The concrete image of a stick for striking underwrites all extended meanings: punishment as 'striking', violence as 'the use of force', and the staff as an object of impact or control.
