Etymology. From √dhṛ (Sanskrit dhṛ 'hold, bear') via the noun dhamma, related to Sanskrit dharma. The sense evolved from 'what is established or held in place' to 'law, custom' to 'religious doctrine' in Buddhism. Cognate with English 'firm', Latin firmus.
