Etymology. From √dṛś 'see' (Sanskrit darśana 'sight, doctrine', Latin dīrigō 'direct the gaze', English direct). The noun diṭṭhi literally means 'seeing' or 'what is seen', hence 'view' as both the act of viewing and the object beheld. In Buddhist usage it came to mean doctrine, philosophy, and especially the fixed views (diṭṭhigatā) that obstruct understanding.
