Etymology. From do- (bright, shining) + sinā (night), a nominal compound. The first element do- is related to Sanskrit dīpti (brilliance) and may connect to the Indo-European root *dei- (to shine), seen also in Latin dies (day) and English day. The second element sinā (night) is cognate with Sanskrit rātri and ultimately with Latin nocturnus through the root *nek- (night).
