Etymology. From Indo-European *oyk-o- 'one', cognate with Latin unus, Sanskrit eka, Greek oîos (in Doric oikos 'alone, only'); also related to English 'unique' and 'unicorn' via Latin. The root appears in many Indo-European languages with the sense of singleness and unity.
