Analysis. evarūpā (fem. nom. sg. of evarūpa 'of such quality') + api ('even, also'); the enclitic api attaches to the preceding word, with final -ā of evarūpā eliding before api to yield evarūpāpi. Common in the suttas to emphasize or concede a quality: 'even such (a one)', 'even such a thing'.

Etymology. evarūpa from eva 'just so, thus' (demonstrative stem, cognate with English 'ever' in the sense 'one-ever', thus 'always-such') + rūpa 'form, quality, kind' (√rūp- 'to give shape', related to English 'rape' in the botanical sense and Latin rapere 'seize, carry'). The stem eva is akin to the Sanskrit demonstrative eva and points to an older *swa-, the reflexive base seen in English 'self' and Latin suus 'his own'; rūpa is cognate with Sanskrit rūpa and the Germanic root *raup- (shape, form). api is an enclitic particle meaning 'also, even, even if', from the same root as Latin -pe (an enclitic in archaic Latin) and possibly related to Greek epi; it adds an emphatic or concessive force.
