Etymology. Root √gam (Sanskrit gam-, Indo-European *gʰem- "to go"). Cognates: English come (from *gʰem- via Germanic), Latin venio "come" (from *gʷem-), Greek básis "step" (from *gʷem-). The present stem gacch- shows the characteristic geminate from the nasal infix present formation (*gam- + -n- > *ganch-, hence gacch-). This formation is typical of Sanskrit and Pali intensive presents: the nasal infix marks repeated or ongoing action, so gacchati conveys continuous going.
